Being A Serious Christian

Many today claim to be Christians. But not too many are living up to what that means. The term Christian means "following Christ.” So if a person is serious about being a Christian, their conduct and thinking would be similar to his. Serious Christianity involves much more than going to church on Sunday and following certain customs and traditions. Early Christians were law-abiding citizens and loyal subjects. They were not drunkards, liars or lazy. Their sexual standards were very high and marriage vows were held sacred. They did this even though they lived in a corrupt, licentious society.

Today, we live in that same kind of immoral society where God is viewed as an obscure being. The Bible is viewed as old and outdated, so being a serious Christian today takes a lot of effort. Learning and living by God's principles and commands in the Bible is essential. The moral code laid out is stated in 1 Cor. 6:9-10. It shows that those who practice idolatry, fornication, adultery, spiritism, drunkenness, thievery and lying are not worthy of God's kingdom. In today's world the churches might be empty if they condemned the things the Bible condemns. Many today attend church more to be entertained and socialize rather than learning how to be a serious Christian. And ministers could be viewed as hired employees who tell the people what they want to hear, not what the Bible really says.

Being a true and serious Christian involves dedication and heavy responsibility. Learning what the Bible says and learning to live by it will determine our level of dedication to Christianity. Consulting the Bible can help us make good decisions in our life.
